Meet Our Team
Spring 2020 Tutors
The EWC is staffed by “peer tutors,” UPRM undergraduate and graduate students majoring in a variety of academic disciplines. Most of us learned English as our second language, all of us are fully bilingual and knowledgeable of diverse writing styles and formats. We collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students in supportive tutoring sessions designed to address their questions, concerns and needs.
We look forward to welcoming you at the Center!

Cristian J Rosario Soliván is a fifth-year undergraduate studying the literature track with a concentration in Teaching Preparation at the UPRM’s English Department. Although he was raised in a small neighborhood in Salinas, he aspires to help future generations once he completes his bachelor’s degree by becoming a high school English teacher. “An educator is not someone who knows a certain subject, but someone who uses such knowledge to encourage the students develop their own critical analysis about their environment.” His hobbies include: watching and reading Japanese artwork (anime and manga respectively), watching Disney movies (knows everything about them), listening to music (he does not discriminate any genre), playing video games, and drawing. Fun facts, he may not look it, but he has Irish ascendance since his last name is a variation of Sullivan, thus if you are Soliván then you are most likely to be related.

Claudia Rodriguez is a fourth year undergraduate student studying Linguistics in the English Department. A lover of languages, she already has four under her belt, which include Japanese and Korean. Fun fact: Claudia lived in South Korea for three months during the summer! Her goal is to become a translator for video games and TV series. A French fry enthusiast and a Coca Cola connoisseur, Claudia is down to talk about anything and everything, from sports teams to anime to makeup. She believes that books are gateways to other worlds, which is why she keeps buying them even though she has no space for them. She has reluctantly begun to read e-books, and will take her a hard time to admit that she actually likes them a lot. Apart from reading, Claudia loves playing video games, watching too many TV series, listening to music, playing her ukulele and laughing at memes.

Cristina Rivera is a third-year English major, currently studying language, mass communication and filmmaking. She loves reading, writing, and meeting new people. She enjoys long walks on beaches and exploring nature, preferably during long road trips with friends. She always says she’ll pick up a dancing class, but she never does. She finally signed up for a filmmaking class and is currently working as a producer for a short horror film. Though this is her first year tutoring at the English Writing Center, this is her second year tutoring overall. She's previously worked as a peer tutor and student activity coordinator at Penn State University, where she also gained experience organizing student workshops and career site visits. Most of all, she gained a passion for language and learning that she hopes to share with her students.

Shasteny Cabrera Roldan is a senior English undergraduate student with a concentration in Linguistics, and a Minor in Writing and Communication. She is slowly but surely working her way up to get her M.A. and later a P.hD, with the goal of becoming a professor of Sociolinguistics. Her interest in English, and languages in general, started early on with her affinity and love of reading fiction. She is an enthusiastic advocate for public libraries as they are a free source of knowledge and shelter that Puerto Rico would benefit greatly from. However, she does have a problem buying multiple copies of books because they’re special editions. Other past times include drawing, video games, sleeping, and not keeping up with all the language learning apps on her phone. She hopes to one day become a polyglot and travel to many different countries.
